Blair Oaks board tables vote on summer school

The Blair Oaks School Board on Tuesday tabled a vote on authorizing a summer school until the availability of state funding for the program could be ensured.

Jim Jones, superintendent, said is "99 percent" sure the state will approve funding for summer school. The Blair Oaks board has unofficially set dates, but it will make a final decision at its April meeting.

"This is a $200,000 risk we are taking, but I am very confident they will approve it," he said of summer school expenditures.

Summer school is scheduled for May 30-June 28. School will not be in session on Fridays and will be held in two, nine-day sessions.

Summer school is mainly held for children in kindergarten through sixth grade, though driver's education is held for students who are old enough. Some credit recovery courses are offered as well.

In other action, the board:

• Approved a $40,440 bid for the replacement of the high school's gutter, fascia and downspouts. Jones said the items are still original from the construction of the high school in 1960. Work could begin as early as next week.

• Approved the school calendar for the 2012-13 school year. The first day of school will be Aug. 15; the last day is scheduled for May 15, 2013.
