Your Opinion: Rezoning request opposed

Dear Editor:

Many neighbors on Hayselton and the surrounding streets are certainly in favor of the Transformation project for our city.

More than many neighbors are not in favor of the transformation of an existing driveway into a city street -poor planning and poor zoning.

The Planning and Zoning Commission, in mid-January, approved a proposal to do just that. The recommendation the commission made to the City Council to go forward with the River Bluffs projects ignores many issues that need to be considered. Council members need to realize the negative aspects which include:

  • The impact on homeowners whose properties are adjacent to or near this proposed street.
  • The environmental repercussions to the area.
  • Safety issues with regard to increased traffic.
  • Safety issues with regard to adding a street on a crowded hairpin curve.
  • The protests of the neighbors.

A neighborhood in the proposed area would indeed be desirable for many people. All we ask is that the developers stick with their original plan to enter from West Main. While this is a more expensive proposition, this was known to them when the house on West Main was torn down years ago in preparation for this development at that time. No fair changing plans like this!

The City Council should see to it that careful planning - that complies with existing ordinances is the proper way to transform our city and develop new neighborhoods.

Help us preserve our neighborhood and vote no on this rezoning request.
