Examining campaign finance reports

In his successful re-election bid, state Rep. Jay Barnes, R-Jefferson City, was the fundraising leader among Cole County's candidates in last month's general elections, raising nearly 10 times that of his Democratic opponent.

But the largest donation went to Eastern District Commissioner Jeff Hoelscher, who received $11,951.76 from the Republican Political Action Committee in Columbia.

The News Tribune looked at two state representative races covering Jefferson City and most of Cole County; the county's Eastern and Western District commissioners races; and the special election to complete the final two years of now-resigned Circuit Clerk Brenda Umstattd's term.

According to the after-election campaign finance reports filed earlier this month, Barnes raised a total of $110,580.18 for the entire election cycle.
