MGA wants $177M in punitive damages in Bratz case

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - Toy maker MGA Entertainment is asking a judge to award it $177 million in punitive damages after a federal jury last month found its rival Mattel Inc. liable for $88 million for misappropriation of trade secrets.

U.S. District Judge David Carter is hearing arguments on the question of punitive damages and other issues on Wednesday.

In their verdict in April, jurors also rejected Mattel's claim that it owned the copyright to MGA's popular Bratz doll line.

Mattel had alleged that the designer of the Bratz dolls, Carter Bryant, was working for Mattel when he came up with the idea and then took it to MGA.

MGA is also asking for more than $162 million in attorney fees and costs.

The judge will also hear Mattel's motion to have the case dismissed.
