19 sex offenders picked up in KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jackson County authorities arrested 19 registered sex offenders for failing to comply with registration laws.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Sharp said the effort Friday to check whether offenders were complying with sex offender registration laws also resulted in three search warrant requests to determine if computers contained child pornography.

The Kansas City Star reported that teams made up of officers from the U.S. Marshals Service and local police departments checked 90 homes.

About 2,000 Jackson County offenders are required to register with the sheriff's department. Most are required to renew their registrations every 90 days and also must notify the department of any change of address, job or vehicle.

The arrests Friday were for a variety of registration violations and could result in both federal and state charges being filed.
