Kansas City funeral home gets reprieve on closure

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A judge is allowing a Kansas City funeral home to stay open while it appeals its license revocation.

The Kansas City Star reported that a Jackson County judge agreed Friday to stay the revocation while an interim manager takes steps to keep Marts Memorial Services operating within the law.

Last month, state regulators removed the license of the funeral home and its owner, Ronald Marts. Regulators cited a string of problems, including that the business delivered the wrong ashes to a grieving husband.

An attorney appointed to work with the funeral home will hire a licensed funeral director for the funeral home and report weekly to the court on the home's compliance. Marts is responsible for paying the attorney a $5,000 retainer and covering his expenses.
