Hands-only CPR sessions for free

It's supported by the latest medical science, it takes just 15 minutes to learn - and it just might save someone's life.

It's called hands-only CPR, and it will be introduced at locations throughout the Jefferson City community Feb. 24 at the St. Mary's Hands on Hearts free day-long event, co-sponsored by the American Heart Association.

Organizers hope to teach at least 500 area residents the new method, which focuses exclusively on chest compressions without the traditional mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Recent studies suggest the hands-only approach can save lives and can be used to help those who suddenly collapse.

Event instructors will include clinicians and community leaders who've been trained in the hands-only method. Training sites include five public locations, as well as instruction for students at Helias and Blair Oaks on the same day.

Community members can drop in for a 15-minute training session at these locations in Jefferson City:

• 6-8 a.m. and 5-8 p.m., Firley YMCA, 525 Ellis Blvd.,

• 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Truman Building, 301 W. High St., second floor atrium

• 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Central Bank Financial Building, 111 E. Miller St., third floor

• 3-7 p.m., HyVee, 3721 W. Truman Blvd., upstairs Club Room

• 3-7 p.m., Gerbes Super Store, 2101 Schotthill Woods Drive, front lobby area
