Jail prisoner hangs self in St. Louis Co.

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) -- Authorities say a 28-year-old man apparently committed suicide by hanging himself in the St. Louis County jail where he'd been housed on a suspected probation violation.

Clayton police say Robert Harris of St. Charles died at a hospital after a correctional officer found him unresponsive alone in his cell.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Harris was found hanging from an air vent with a sheet tied around his neck.

Police say jail officials said Harris had not indicated any desire to commit suicide and that he was not on a suicide watch.

The county's medical examiner's office says preliminary autopsy results suggest the case was a suicide.
