Minnie J. Fortson

Minnie J. Fortson, 94, of Jefferson City, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at Villa Marie Nursing Home, surrounded by her family. She was born on January 22, 1925, in Forsyth; a daughter of the late Owen Joseph and Oval Jewell (Meredith) Fisher. She was united in marriage to Malcolm W. Fortson on June 19, 1943, he preceded her in death in 1986. In her youth she attended a one room school house in Cedar Creek. She moved with her family to Jefferson City in the fall of 1952. In 1966, she went to work at Memorial Hospital as a nurse's aide until her retirement in 1987. She was a very caring and loving friend to her patients and fellow workers. Minnie enjoyed reading, puzzles, watching her "shows", chatting on the phone, and visiting with friends. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved her family and her greatest joy was spending time with them and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children: Harlan Fortson of Jefferson City, Prudy J. Garber of Jefferson City, Malcolm W. Fortson (Paula) of Nixa, Rodney J. Fortson (Becky) of Westphalia, Rhonda S. Schmidt of Jefferson City, Michael J. Fortson of Jefferson City, Paul L. Fortson of California, Carolyn L. Dixon (Ron) of Auxvasse, and Douglas H. Fortson of Jefferson City; daughter-in-law: Melody Fortson of Jefferson City; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Minnie is preceded in death by one son: Gary O. Fortson; one granddaughter; one grandson; four sisters; and one brother. Family and Friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 20, 2019, at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. Funeral Service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
