Mr. Edgar P. Rackers, age 85 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Friday, June 14, 2013, at Adams Street Place. Ed was born September 27, 1927, in Jefferson City, the son of Ben and Anna Wilbers Rackers. He was married on July 16, 1949, in Jefferson City, to Joan Huddleston, who survives at the home. A lifelong resident of the central Missouri area, Ed attended Immaculate Conception School then joined the United States Army serving in the Signal Corps during World War II. After his service in the Army, Ed went to work at Tweedie's Shoe Factory and then moved to Joe Meyer Hardware Store. He spent the majority of his career working as a salesman with Burkle Shoe Store. For the past 18 years, Ed has been a courtesy driver at a local dealership. Ed was a member of Immaculate Conception Church; a Golden Eagle with the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie 2693; and was a past Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 6 at Immaculate Conception Church In his free time, Ed enjoyed bowling and gardening, but his passion was building bird houses. Survivors include: his wife of 63 years, Joan Rackers; one daughter, Glenda M. Kolb of Kirksville, Mo.; one son, Eddie P. Rackers Jr. of Hereford, Ariz.; two sisters, Lorine Holliday of Jefferson City, Mo. and Margaret Fishburn of Cincinnati, Ohio; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dale J. Rackers on May 15, 2012; and one sister, Dorothy Tripp. Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2013. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2013, in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Colin Franklin officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held at Riverview Cemetery. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.
