Carrol J. McCubbin

Carrol J. McCubbin, age 97, of Osage Beach, passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2013, at his home. A beloved husband and patriarch of a large family, Carrol was preceded in death by wife, Sarah Watkins McCubbin of Iberia, with whom he had five children and is survived by wife, Betty Gayle McCubbin of the home. Surviving children and their spouses are Brenda McCubbin Schaffer and husband Fred of Iberia, Rebecca McCubbin Thomas and husband Wayne of Lake Ozark, Greg McCubbin and wife Linda of Denver, Colorado, Twyla McCubbin Service and husband William of Shawnee, Kansas, and Beth McCubbin Coppage and husband Robert of Greeensboro, North Carolina. Surviving step-children are John Gayle Atteberry and wife Sharon of Jefferson City, Paula Rouch Wilson of Sikeston, and Winn Rouch of Eldon. He is also survived by one niece, Rayma Wenig of Sedalia. His extended family includes 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Carrol was born on September 1, 1915, on a farm near Brumley, son of Oscar and Eliza and one of three brothers. He was a member of Brumley Baptist Church and a graduate of Brumley High School which prepared him for a lifetime of service to the county, state, and country he loved. Carrol served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as staff communications officer for Admiral Thomas Kincaid, Commander, Seventh Fleet, Pacific Theatre. Carrol participated in the invasion of the Phillippines and patrolled the coast of China before returning home in 1946. He eventually retired from the Navy after serving for 20 years in the Naval Reserve. Carrol earned a BS in School Administration at Central Missouri State University and a Master of Education degree from the University of Missouri. He began his 20 year career as an educator by teaching elementary and high school in Brumley, served as superintendent of Brumley schools, and concluded by serving 14 years as Miller County Superintendent of Schools. He was elected president of the Missouri State County Superintendents of Schools in 1962. Carrol was elected in 1964 to the Missouri State Legislature where he faithfully served Miller County as State Representative for 18 years until 1982. The Republican Caucus elected him as Assistant Minority Floor Leader for 1975-1976, and he served on the Education Committee throughout his term in the State House. He also served on the Tourism Commission, Study Committee for Higher Education and on the Committee on Master Plan for Higher Education. Carrol joined the Masonic Lodge at age 23, was a long-time member of VFW Post 2422 in Lake Ozark, a past member of the VFW, American Legion, and Lions Clubs in Iberia. He was also a member of the Military Retirees Association and the Public Retired Teachers Association. His love of family, wisdom, and passions for history and politics will be greatly missed. Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10, at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Dr. Rev. Wayne Cogell will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in Iberia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, April 9, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Carrol J.
