Mr. Billy G. Shelnutt, age 85 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Friday, May 25, 2012, at Heisinger Bluffs. Bill was born September 30, 1926, in Ashland, Mo., the son of Charles D. and Gertrude B. Coonce Shelnutt. He was married on July 14, 1946, in Cedar City, Mo., to Velma A. Hughes. A resident of the central Missouri area for the majority of his life, Bill was a 1944 graduate of Jefferson City High School and a 1948 graduate of Jefferson City Junior College. He later attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. He served in the United States Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. Bill worked for IBM Corporation for 27 years retiring as manager of customer engineering in 1982. During his tenure with IBM, Bill worked mostly in downtown Chicago but also in St. Louis, Milwaukee and Baltimore. Prior to his work at IBM, Bill worked at Monroe Calculating Machine Company in Jefferson City, Mo. He was a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church in Holts Summit, Mo. and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Roy Sone Post 1003 in Jefferson City. Bill was an avid reader and always loved spending time with his family. Survivors include: his wife of 65 years, Velma Shelnutt; one daughter, Julie A. Conklin and her husband Mark of Bolingbrook, Ill.; and two grandchildren, Kyle J. Kukuk and Kory A. Kukuk, both of Bolingbrook, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Alma Northway. A visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2012. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2012, in the Freeman Chapel with Chaplain Jim Mueller officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held at Riverview Cemetery. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Hospice Compassus or the charity of their choice.
