Catherine Mardell Wyrick Spurlock, age 90, of Columbia, went to her heavenly home on Saturday, October 8, 2011. She was born September 22, 1921. Her parents were Edgar and Mary Alice Wyrick of Jefferson City. She lived at South Hampton Place for six years and all her care givers were greatly loved. Catherine had a kind word and a loving smile for everyone. She was a school teacher in New Bloomfield before marrying Robert Spurlock on January 18, 1946. He preceded her in death on February 23, 1994. She worked at the News Tribune in Jefferson City, JCPenneys and Philips and Company in Columbia. One of her joys in the 1950's was writing jingles for Central Dairy. She won one dollar per jingle and there are a stack of winning coupons for her children. She loved writing poetry. She leaves two daughters, Mary Carol Shelley and Sharon Kay Kewley; one beloved son-in-law, Larry Kewley; seven grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a loving sister and brother-in-law, Bernadine and Lee Thompson of Jefferson City; and three sister-in-laws, Elizabeth Wilson Guthrie, Gerry Degase and Fay Boone of Ava. She requested a graveside service at Ava Cemetery, Ava which will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home, Columbia.
