Nelson R. Porter

Nelson R. Porter, age 71, of Jefferson City, died Friday, November 4, 2011, at his sister-in-law's home in Jefferson City. He was born January 29, 1940, in Moniteau County, a son of Raymond R. and Wanda Bolin Porter. On June 28, 1959, Nelson was united in marriage to Carol L. Sapp at the Union Baptist Church in Jamestown, and she survives at their home. He was a 1958 graduate of Jamestown High School. Nelson went to work for Brown Quarry's Incorporated in St. Louis, retiring as ranch manager in 1983. Following his retirement he returned to central Missouri to own and operate Nelson Porter Quarter Horses until his health failed him in the past few years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elston. Nelson was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fish, camp, garden, and just recently divulged his favorite mushroom hunting spot. His greatest enjoyment came from spending time on his farm and being with his family. Survivors, in addition to his wife of 52 years, include three sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Brenda Porter of Jefferson City, Kevin and Carol Porter of Republic, and Tony and Donna Porter of Jefferson City; six siblings and their spouses, Carol and Chester Bowden of Hartsburg, Roger and Linda Porter of Barnett, Lanny and Debbie Porter of California, Russell and Ava Porter, Jarett and Karen Porter, and Noland and Lisa Porter, all of Jamestown; nine grandsons, Blake Porter, Tyler Porter and wife Ashley, Cole Porter, Zachary Porter, Lucas Porter, Ethan Porter, Evan Porter, Wyatt Porter and Weston Porter; four great-grandchildren, Lillie and Hayes Porter and Molly and Jackson Porter; his best canine buddy, Elle Mae; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Nyla Williams and Linda Porter; and an infant brother, Ronald Porter. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 8, at the First Baptist Church in Elston with Dr. Monte Shinkle and Rev. Matt Kearns officiating. Entombment will be in the Hawthorn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, November 7, at the First Baptist Church in Elston. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Elston or the Jefferson City Animal Shelter Building Fund.
