Mavis G. Hopkins, 92, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011. She was born November 7, 1918, in Raymondville, Mo., a daughter of Henry Blaine and Grace Belle (Hibbs) Smallwood. She graduated from Houston High School in 1937, and a post graduate in Teachers Training in 1939. After graduating from Jefferson City Junior College in 1941, she went to work for the State of Missouri in Data Processing. She retired at the age of 63, after 35 years. After she retired, Mavis spent her time on family research. She belonged to several Genealogical and Historical Societies in Ohio, Kentucky and Missouri. Mavis was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Roscoe Enloe Post 5, and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary Roy Sone Post 1003 in Jefferson City, Mo. She loved spending time with family and friends. She also loved to travel and read. She is survived by a daughter: Sally C. Brummett of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; one grandson: Aaron M. Berhorst (wife Martha) of Florida; eight nephews, seven nieces, 16 great-nephews, 14 great-nieces; and many great-great nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Arthur Lowell Smallwood and Blaine Afton Smallwood; one sister: Shirley Sarabel Baker Hitz; one niece: Penny Clark; one nephew: Mike Smallwood; and many close friends. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday, April 1, 2011, at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the Allen Cemetery in Raymondville, Mo., with Rev. Wallace officiating. Please, instead of flowers and plants, memorial contributions are suggested to the family of Mavis Hopkins, to help her nephew Bruce Hitz, who has had and is recovering from a major stroke.
