Edgar W. "Jake" Schenewerk, 78, of Centertown, passed away Monday, January 17, 2011, at St. Mary's Health Center. He was born August 2, 1932, in Jefferson City, a son of the late Oscar and Josephine (Wekamp) Schenewerk. He attended St. Martin grade school and went on to graduate from St. Peter's High School. On May 2, 1953, he was united in marriage at St. Peter Catholic Church in Jefferson City, to Mary Ann Sturm, who survives at their home. After graduation, he worked as a salesman at Heidbreder Auto Parts. He entered the United States Army in January 1953, and was honorably discharged in December 1954. He was employed as a salesman for Milton Auto Parts and then Derby Refining Company. He then started Midstate Oil Company in 1965 and built up to 45 stations, including 20 convenience stores throughout the State of Missouri. In 1985, he leased the stations to MFA Oil until 1995, at which time he started Bee Line Snack Shops with seven stations, which were sold in July of 2006. Other companies owned were Midstate Lanes, Midstate Foods, Midstate Vending, grocery stores in Knobnoster and Concordia, Mo.; AAA Auto Parts in Columbia, Mo.; Town & Country John Deere dealership in Jefferson City. He also sponsored many softball and baseball teams from Little League to Babe Ruth to Midstate Oil Men's Slow Pitch and Fast Pitch Softball Teams. The Midstate Men's Slow Pitch Softball Team won six consecutive State Championships from 1974 - 1979. In January, 2010, they were inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in Springfield. He enjoyed traveling in his motor home with the Capital City Campers and the Slow Pitch Team. He also enjoyed farming, collecting John Deere equipment and memorabilia, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, great-grandson and his grand dog, Ruger. He was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion. Along with his wife of 57 years, Jake is also survived by one daughter: Gayle Barnard (husband Larry) of Henley, Mo.; one son: Dale Schenewerk (wife Sharon) of Kirksville, Mo.; four grandchildren: Nicole Barnard of Jefferson City, Mo.; Kristina Crockett (husband Jeff) of Republic, Mo.; Dale Schenewerk Jr. of Mexico, Mo.; Angela Schenewerk of Kirksville, Mo.; one great-grandson: Tristan of Jefferson City, Mo.; one brother: Larry Schenewerk of California, Mo.; and one sister: Alice Bernskoetter of California, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, with a prayer service to be held at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 20, 2011, at St. Martin Catholic Church, with Fr. Edwin A. Schmidt officiating. Entombment will follow in the Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum.
