Elvin Lee Nichols, 64, of New Bloomfield, passed away Saturday, January 1, 2011, at his home. He was born August 12, 1946, in Fulton, the son of John S. and Oleta May (Lockett) Nichols. On April 5, 1973, he was united in marriage to Shirley Elaine (Moore) Nichols, who preceded him in death on October 18, 2001. Elvin served our country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, he was with the 9th Division Combat Infantry from 1967 - 1969. He graduated from Lincoln University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. He worked for the Fulton State Hospital as a Psychiatric Aide II. He retired from the Department of Corrections as a Chemist in August 2000. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Fulton, 30 year member of the American Chemical Society and VFW Post 1003 of Jefferson City. He enjoyed attending MU basketball games with Angie. He was an avid sports fan, energy conservation enthusiast and enjoyed playing chess and coin collecting. He was also an annual contributor to the Central Missouri Food Bank. In addition to his mother, Oleta Nichols of Fulton, he will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by one daughter, Angie Nichols of Ashland; two grandchildren, Ellena and Lewis Williams; one sister, Lona Sharon (Richard) Warner of Harlingen, Texas; one brother, Leland Mark (Becky) Nichols of Fulton; two nephews, Shannon Nichols and Anthony Nichols. His father; one daughter, Sylvia Gaylee Nichols; and brother, Murray Lynn Nichols, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 7, 2011, at Maupin Funeral Home in Fulton, with Reverend Mike Haldeman officiating. Interment will be held at Callaway Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 6, 2011, at Maupin Funeral Home.
