William Wood (Veteran)

William (Bill) Henry Wood, 63, of Holts Summit, died Sunday, April 24, 2011, at St. Mary's Health Center. He was born December 10, 1947, at his family home in Flat, the son of the late William Paul and Marjorie Louise (Bradford) Wood. He was united in marriage on March 23, 1968, at Church of Christ in Edgar Springs, to Gwendolyn Sue Wilson, who survives at the home. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving as an aviation mechanic aboard the USS Ranger during Vietnam. Bill was employed with ABB for 31 years until his retirement in 2004. He was a member of the Church of Christ for the last 43 years and attended the Fairgrounds Road Church of Christ in Jefferson City. He served as the president of the Holts Summit Lion's Club and had a passion for helping others. He was an avid outdoorsman/woodsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. He loved baking and made the best pies around. He had a zest for life and lived everyday to its fullest. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He always worked so hard to make the best life for them all. He was the rock Öhis family meant everything to him. Hardworking, always activeÖ He is survived by his two children, his daughter, Gwen Welch and her husband Jesse of Holts Summit and his son, William (Bill) I. Wood and his wife Julie of Holts Summit; six grandchildren, Reece Fewins and his wife Shannon, Jordan Fewins, Zachary Fewins, Jesse C. Welch, William (Billy) Wood, and Cora Mae Wood, all of Holts Summit; two brothers, James Paul Wood and wife Ethel of Flat, and Michael Bradford Wood and his life partner Mark Adams of St. Charles; and numerous additional family and friends. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Jeanne Louise Davis of Cuba. Friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Fairgrounds Road Church of Christ, 1316 Fairgrounds Road in Jefferson City. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at the Fairgrounds Road Church of Christ, with Ministers Brent Newton and Don Harris officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Summit Memorial Park Cemetery in Holts Summit. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Fair Havens Children's Home in Springfield.
