Jewell D. Dietzel, 87, of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at The Bluffs. Jewell was born July 27, 1923, in Natchez, Mississippi to Hilliard and Icie Mae Deuel Vaughan and they preceded her in death. She was married on November 21, 1945, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Lonnie Dietzel and he preceded her in death. Jewell was a graduate of California High School and attended Teaching College in Warrensburg. She then taught school in Walnut Grove, a one room school house, in Moniteau County. Jewell received her LPN Degree from Strawn School of Nursing and retired from University Hospital in 1983, after 12 years of service. Jewell enjoyed reading, genealogy, knitting, crocheting, quilting and she was a long time member of First Christian Church where she was active in the Prayer Shawl Ministry. She is survived by daughter, Judy (Darrell) Imsland of Eugene; son, Larry (Nora) Dietzel of Columbia; sisters, Frankie Hanson of Big Bear Lake, Calif. and Wanda Johanson of Modesto, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Melanie Dietzel of Fayetteville, Ark.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by son, Dr. Allyn Dietzel, D.V.M. and brother, Hilliard Thomas "H.T." Vaughan. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 25, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to Happy Tails Animal Sanctuary, 5900 S.
