Herman Smith (Veteran)

Mr. Herman Grove Smith, age 88 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at his home. Herman was born February 18, 1922 in Richmond, Mo., the son of Henry Parris and Lelia Seward Smith. He was married on September 30, 1968, in Jefferson City, Mo., to Marjorie Adams. He graduated from Richmond High School in 1939 and enlisted for six years in the United States Navy on September 5, 1941. By the time Herman had finished boot camp and electrical school in Great Lakes, the war had started. Herman volunteered for submarine duty, went to submarine school in New London and continued on to Mare Island to board the USS Stingray. Herman made five patrols out of Pearl Harbor, spent two months in Relief Crew in Brisbane, Australia and he was then sent to a new construction aboard the USS Hardhead in Manitowoc, Wis. Herman made six patrols aboard the USS Hardhead from Fremantle, Australia and Subic Bay, Phillipines Island. On December 23, 1945, Herman was transferred to the USS Carbonero. He made two Asiatic tours prior to his discharge on September 7, 1947. Herman returned to Jefferson City and joined the Missouri Highway Dept. where he worked for 37 years. He was party chief of the survey crew. Herman was a registered land surveyor. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher for 30 years, was a deacon, coached softball, and loved to work with children and young people. He was a Boy Scout Leader, served as president of the Jeff Junior P.T.A., was a life member of the U.S. Sub Vets of World War II and served as president of the Muddy Mo Squadron in Missouri. Herman was a wonderful husband, a great dad, and a doting grandpa. Survivors include: his wife of 43 years, Marjorie; three sons, Robert Dwayne Smith, Daniel Smith, and David Smith; two daughters, Debra Enright and Donna Smith; one daughter-in-law, Rebecca French Smith; 12 grandchildren, Ronald Kent Smith, Phillip Kirk Smith, Robert Lance Smith, Sarah Jane Smith, Chris Smith, Lindsey Smith, Jacob Tremaine, William Smith, Brandon Smith, Joseph Tremaine, Hunter Smith, and Collin Smith; three great- grandchildren, Dalton, Carol Ann and Derrick. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m., Saturday, October 9, 2010. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Saturday in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Doyle Sager officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church.
