Richard Louis Volmert, 74, of Jefferson City, passed away Sunday, November 14, 2010, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born April 1, 1936, in Vienna, a son of the late John F. and Bertha C. (Stratman) Volmert. He was a graduate of St. Peter's Grade School and Vienna High School. On June 6, 1959, he was united in marriage at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Wardsville, to Agnes Ann Kolb, who survives at their home. He retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel from the Missouri Army National Guard following 38 years of service. He was a 1972 graduate of the US Army Ordinance Center and School and received numerous accommodations and medals. Richard served as a Deputy Sheriff with the Cole County Sheriff's Department. He was a member of the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 2693, Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 513 and was a charter member of the Wardsville Lion's Club. Richard dedicated his life to his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved fishing and hunting and had a special affinity for boating and water sports. Sports played an important role in Richard's life both as an honored athlete and coach. He was instrumental in the Wardsville Little League as a founder and coach for many years. Along with his wife Agnes, Richard is also survived by one daughter, Gina Marie Volmert of Jefferson City; two sons, Jeffrey Alan Volmert of Wardsville and Bradley Lewis Volmert and wife, Khonsavan of Columbia; four grandchildren, Kate Ly Volmert and Ann Marie Volmert, both of Columbia, and James Kenneth Volmert and Christopher Alan Volmert, both of Denver, Colo.; one brother, Leslie F. Volmert of Vienna; and numerous extended family members and friends. He was also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Girard Volmert, on May 21, 2010, and one sister, Polly A. Volmert Pecher. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 18, 2010, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Wardsville, with Fr. Gregory C. Meystrik officiating. Entombment with full military honors will follow in the St. Stanislaus Church Cemetery Mausoleum. Additional visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Kenneth G. Volmert Memorial Scholarship Fund benefiting Helias High School students attending the University of Missouri Rolla (MO School for Science and Technology), the St. Stanislaus Education Fund, The American Lung Association or the GOLD Foundation for COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Research.
