Mrs. Nellie Marion Potter Herndon, age 92 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at the Capital Region Medical Center. Marion was born December 23, 1917, in Moniteau County, Mo., the daughter of Franklin Marion and Fannie Belle Hutchison Potter. Her father had died in October prior to her birth and she was given the name Marion in his honor. Her mother died when she was nine years old. Marion lived with Carl and Ruth George until she was 19 years old when she moved to Jefferson City to work. She attended school in Moniteau County and the Capitol Business College in Jefferson City. She accepted Jesus as her Savior at age 15 at Mount Zion Baptist Church near Jamestown, Mo., where she met her husband Lora Elmo Herndon. They were married on March 17, 1939, in California, Mo. They had two children, Brenda Ruth and Susan Kay. Marion worked at Oberman's Manufacturing Co. and the Tweedie Footwear Factory prior to retiring from the Missouri Division of Insurance in 1976. She was a member of First Baptist Church and active in several organizations. She taught Sunday School in the children's department for several years. She had been a Brownie Leader at East School. Marion was also a member of the Assn. of Retired Missouri State Employees and the National Assn. of Retired Federal Employees. Marion's hobbies were writing devotionals, short stories and acrostic poems. Survivors include: one daughter, Brenda Judkins and her husband Timothy of Carrollton, Texas; three grandsons, Kevin Judkins and his wife Peggy of McKinney, Texas, Aaron Judkins and his wife Gabrielle of Pleasanton, Texas, and Jay Williams and his wife Michelle of Springfield, Mo.; one great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn; five great-grandsons, Hunter, Tanner, Cody, Connor, and Cole; three foster sisters, Marion Baer, Shirley Baer, and Linda Wohlbold; and one foster brother, Billie George. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lora, who passed away in 2005 after 66 years of marriage; and one daughter, Susan, who passed away in 1992. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 27, 2010, in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Doyle Sager and the Reverend James Mueller officiating. Interment will be at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Samaritan's Purse.
