Jess McGill (Veteran)

Jess Herbert "Herb" McGill, age 85, of Warsaw, passed away Friday, January 8, 2010, at the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital in Clinton. He was born March 11, 1924, in Clarksburg, the son of Roy and Minnie (Wright) McGill. He grew up and attended school in Moniteau County. He enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17, serving a total of seven years in both World War II and Korea, before being honorably discharged in April of 1952. During his time in Korea he was wounded and later received the Purple Heart for his valor. In January of 1955, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Butts in Moniteau County. They made their home and worked in the Moniteau County area before moving to Kansas City, where Herb was employed as a hostler for Yellow Freight for nearly 30 years, before retiring and moving permanently to Warsaw in 1986. Unto this union, four sons were born. In May of 1980 he was united in marriage to Esther Louise (Gilliam) Baker, whom preceded him in death on February 1, 2006. He was a member of the Bent Tree Harbor Volunteer Fire Department and the tribe of Mic-O-Say. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. However, his most enjoyable time was that spent with his family, whom will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife; one infant son, Randall Eugene McGill in 1957; an infant granddaughter, Elizabeth Nichole McGill on May 19, 1988; two sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his first wife, Carolyn Laughlin, of Lee's Summit; three sons, Ken McGill and his wife Karen, of Clearwater, Kan., Rick McGill, of Warsaw and David McGill, of Independence; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three step-daughters; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at the Reser Funeral Home in Warsaw. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6:30-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Graveside services and military honors will be at the Highland Cemetery near Latham.
