Samuel Winn (Veteran)

Samuel Edward Winn, age 86, of Jefferson City, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2010, at St. Mary's Health Center. He was born to Henry Lee and Mattie Reaves Winn in Dallas, Texas on January 22, 1924. Samuel was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army. While stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, Samuel (Sam) met and fell in love with Wanda Andres of Jefferson City. They were united in marriage on December 20, 1941. This union lasted nearly 65 years until Wanda's death on November 7, 2006. Sam, also affectionately known as "Big Sam", was a faithful member of Immanuel Baptist Church, receiving love and strength from his church family. Sam was also a life member of Disabled American Veterans Oliver Buehrle Chapter 17 and life member of American Legion Roscoe Enloe Post 5 both in Jefferson City, and the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge 596 in Tebbetts. He is survived by his son, Sam A. Winn and his wife Susan, and two grandchildren, Laura and Chad. Sam was preceded in death by his mother and father; two sisters, Jewel Gaylord and Dorothy Holden; one brother, Luther Winn; and his wife, Wanda Winn. Samuel was so proud of his adopted hometown of "Jeff City". Bowling was a favorite pastime in which he was once honored as a senior champion in the Missouri State Senior Games with two gold and one bronze medal. Fishing and spending time at the Lake of the Ozarks were also favorite pastimes. Most recently Sam resided at Oak Tree Villas. The family wishes to thank all of the staff and friends who lovingly blessed his life. Friends will be received from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at the Houser-Millard Funeral Home, where funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Shane Crum officiating. Entombment will follow in the Hawthorn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to Immanuel Baptist Church.
