L. Kelan Spalding

L. Kelan Spalding, age 74, of Springfield, passed away Friday, July 30, 2010. Kelan was born February 17, 1936 in Eugene. His parents, Robert Ford Spalding and Opal Bruce Spalding, preceded him in death. Kelan worked in the clothing industry from 1956 to 1973, with Oberman Mfg. Company, Levi Strauss and Company, and the H.D. Lee Company. In October 1973, he was employed by Prudential Insurance Company and served them for 20 years, retiring in December 1993. Kelan loved the outdoors - hunting, fishing, and playing golf. He was a member of Elks Lodge 409 and Parkview Christian Church in Springfield. He is survived by his wife, Betty Carpenter Spalding; one daughter, Joni of Stover; and three sons, Jeff of Sedalia, Craig of Concordia, and Kip of Miller. Kelan is also survived by three step-sons: Randy, Rick, and Tim Carpenter; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Kelan Spalding will be missed by many, many friends who will proudly say, "I am glad I knew him." Memorial services will be held at Gorman-Scharpf in Springfield on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Kelan's name be made to the Springfield Boys and Girls Club, 1410 N. Fremont, Springfield, MO 65802
