Post 5 Seniors go 5-0 during weekend to win Ballwin tourney

BALLWIN, Mo. - For the second straight weekend, the Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Seniors are tournament champions.

The Post 5 Seniors concluded the Ballwin Battles Cancer Tournament with a pair of wins Sunday, defeating Chesterfield Post 556 15-0 in five innings and then topping Alton (Ill.) Post 126 10-5.

Jefferson City finished with a 5-0 record during the tournament.

Post 5 scored five runs in the second inning and six more in the third to help put away Chesterfield early by run-rule.

Meanwhile, Zach Davidson pitched a one-hitter, striking out 14 of the 17 batters he faced. Aside from the strikeouts, Chesterfield had a one-out double in the first inning, a one-out walk in the second and an infield pop-up in the fourth.

Jack Shinkle led the Post 5 hitting attack, going 2-for-3 with two singles and five RBI.

Josef Keilholz drove in three runs and added a single and a double, while Justin Wood was 2-for-3 with two singles and two RBI. Dawson Schulte finished with two singles.

Post 5 scored three runs in the top of the first inning against Alton and never trailed. Jefferson City led 7-0 through 2 innings.

Post 5's first four hitters combined to go 10-for-19 with seven RBI against Alton. Zach Woehr led the hitting attack, going 3-for-4 with a single, a double, a triple and two RBI. He reached base in all five plate appearances.

Wood added three singles and two RBI, while Shinkle had two doubles and three RBI. Dawson Koch also tallied a single and a double.

Gage Bax added a multihit game from the No. 6 spot in the batting order with a pair of singles.

Keilholz was the winning pitcher. He threw six-plus innings and gave up five runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Koch finished the seventh, striking out one and walking two while leaving the bases loaded to end the game.

Jefferson City outscored its opponents 72-19 during the tournament to claim the Ken Eckardt Memorial Trophy.

The Post 5 Seniors (8-1) will play next weekend in the Washington Wood Bat Tournament. Jefferson City opens against Thoman Boothe at noon Saturday, then faces Elsberry at 2:30 p.m. at Ronsick Field.
