Helias boys, girls win crowns at Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Mo. - The Helias boys and girls cross country teams swept the titles Saturday in the New Haven Invitational at New Haven City Park.

The Lady Crusaders won with the perfect score of 15 points, claiming the top six spots in the girls race. Abby Hake won in a time of 20:02.63, followed by Emma Veltrop (20:22.36), Morgan Yanksey (20:36.76), Alicia Engelbrecht (20:44.26) and Ashley Eskens (20:51.58) to round out the top five.

Claire McDonald finished sixth, while Lani Andrews (13th), Elly Bowles (14th) and Danielle Kroll (17th) also finished in the top 20 out of 86 runners.

A pair of Blair Oaks and Calvary Lutheran runners rounded out the top 10 in the girls race. For Blair Oaks, Emily Yaeger finished seventh and Grace Scott placed ninth, while Sarah Johnson and Emma Homfeldt took eighth and 10th place, respectively, for Calvary Lutheran.

Blair Oaks placed third in the team standings with 134 points, followed by Calvary with 134 points. New Haven finished second with 84.

Linn took eighth as a team with 195 points. Lindsey Lebel led the Lady Wildcats with a 23rd-place finish. Chamois' Katie Keilholz placed 19th.

The Helias boys claimed the team title with 43 points, aided by a 1-2 finish in the individual standings. Jack Crull won for the Crusaders in a time of 16:23.25, followed by Jenson Starr in second at 16:44.50.

Nathan Wieberg and Brian Kirchhoff placed 10th and 11th, respectively, to medal for the Crusaders.

Linn's Cole Stephens took third in 17:23.01, lead the Wildcats to a fourth-place finish in the team standings with 103 points.

Blair Oaks finished fifth with 128 points. Cole Brenneke led the Falcons with a ninth-place finish in 17:58.26, while Adam McCauley took 13th.

New Bloomfield's Payton Culwell placed 14th out of 66 runners, while the Wildcats took eighth place with 137 points.

Linn's Logan Klouzek finished 15th to claim the last medal spot.

Helias also won the JV boys team title with 15 points, taking the top four spots.

Riley Scott won with a time of 18:36.29, followed by Peyton Wright, Daniel Dusenberg and Austin Sooter. Grayson Knernschield rounded out the team score with a sixth-place finish and Gabe Borgmeyer placed seventh for the Crusaders.

Zach Hagner took ninth out of 76 runners to lead Blair Oaks in the JV race.

Linn finished third in the team standings with 87, led by Tommy Blackburn, who took 18th place.

There was no JV girls race Saturday.
