Blair Oaks sweeps quad to reach milestone

WARDSVILLE, Mo. - Averaging more than 10 wrestling dual victories a year is impressive.

When the Blair Oaks Falcons started their wrestling program, getting one or two a year was the goal.

"When we first started out, I wasn't sure we'd ever even get to 100," Blair Oaks coach Tim Karsten said after the Falcons picked up the 150th dual victory in program history Tuesday night in sweeping three decisions in a quad with Knob Noster, Southern Boone and Palmyra at the middle school.

"We know the rules have changed a little bit through the years, everybody is wrestling more duals because of quads like this."

The Falcons reached the milestone victory in the 15th year of the program.

"The first three or four years, we were only getting a win or two," Karsten, the only head coach in the history of the program, said. "But slowly, we got the program to where we wanted it to be and where it is now, which is respectable and a challenger to finish in the top 10 at state every year."

Two Falcons climbed the ladder in all-time victories at the school Tuesday night. London Gaydos now has 119 career victories, while Bo Thomas got into triple digits with 101.

"We've got another wrestler within striking range of 100 victories, so we may have another announcement sometime during a dual," Karsten said. "I like making those kind of announcements."

The Falcons dominated their three opponents Tuesday night, winning by a combined score of 174-55.

Blair Oaks opened with a 54-16 win against Knob Noster.

"I was worried about Knob Noster," Karsten said. "But they've had a couple of injuries and I think if their regular lineup was here, it might have been a little closer."

The dual may have featured the win of the night for the Falcons. Kyler Griep of Blair Oaks trailed late in his 145-pound match against Brandon Rogalski, only to get a reversal and a set of back points at the buzzer to win a 12-10 decision.

"That's a big win for him," Karsten said. "That was a district opponent and that will help when it comes to district seeding next month. Plus it's nice to have that memory of a win if they happen to meet again."

Blair Oaks then bested Tri-County Conference foe Southern Boone 54-27. The Eagles are in their first year of wrestling.

"I remember what it was like at the start, they're doing a lot of the right things," Karsten said.

Blair Oaks closed with a 66-12 win against Palmyra.

"They did win a couple of matches and you have to look at the positives when you're in that situation," Karsten said.

Finishing 3-0 on the night for Blair Oaks were Jayce Griggs at 113, Joey Conway at 126, Bo Thomas at 138, Griep at 145, Ben Thomas at 152, Paul Karsten at 182, Lucas Holtmeyer at 195 and Scott Farley at 220.

Ben Thomas won all of his matches by fall.

Blair Oaks will take its varsity and JV to the Seneca Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
