Jays, Lady Jays each move to state in seven events

O'FALLON, Mo. - The Jefferson City boys and girls track and field teams will each be in seven events at next week's Class 5 state track and field championships at Adkins Stadium.

At Saturday's Sectional 3 meet at Fort Zumwalt West, the Jays advanced to state in six individual events and one relay, while the Lady Jays move on in five individual events and two relays.

The Jefferson City boys tallied 77 points to finish fifth and the girls had 59 points to take sixth.

Taking first in the boys standings was Lee's Summit North with 96 points and Battle was first on the girls side with 102 points.

Leading the way for the Jays were Devin Roberson and Corey Suttle, who finished 1-2 in the discus and shot put. Roberson threw the discus 199 feet and the shot put 54-5 to win.

In the javelin, Brendan Rozier was a winner with a toss of 168-11.

In the 1,600-meter run, Landon Dunlap recorded a time of 4:33.44 for a runner-up finish.

Ben Krause advanced in the 800-meter run with a third-place finish in 2:01.28.

Also moving on for the Jays is Andrew Dyer in the 110-meter hurdles after placing fourth in 15.24 seconds.

The Jays will take their 4x800-meter relay team of Thomas Nield, Deaken Walker, Andrew Nield and Krause to the state meet after they placed fourth in 8:10.17.

Dijonay Dawson will participate in four events at the state meet for the Lady Jays.

She placed fourth in the 100- and 200-meter dashes in 12.24 and 25.65 seconds, respectively. She's also part of the 4x100- and 4x200-meter relay teams that advanced.

Dawson, Zaliah Dunbar, Lashawna Chambers and Rhakala Blackmon placed second in the 4x200 in 1:45.35.

Dawson, Dunbar, Ezinne Opara and Blackmon were fourth in the 4x100 in 49.77 seconds.

Kiara Strayhorn of the Lady Jays will also be busy after qualifying in three events. She won the high jump (5-5) and long jump (18-7) and was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.35 seconds.
