Kaitlyn Schwandtner of Jefferson City makes a pass during Tuesday night's game against the Hickman Kewpies at the 179 Soccer Park.

The strategy was simple heading into overtime for the Jefferson City Lady Jays.

Be patient, but when the opportunity came, pounce.

"I told the girls to wait for the first mistake and when they made that first mistake, go at them," Jefferson City coach Joren Trimble said.

The Lady Jays got that chance late in the first 10-minute overtime period as Bailey Dey scored to give Jefferson City a 1-0 victory Tuesday night against the Hickman Kewpies at the 179 Soccer Park.

Scoreless heading into extra time, Hickman had the better of play in the first half of overtime.

But Jefferson City was able to work the ball down the field and Daelynn Scheulen found Dey open down the left side. Dey then lined a shot into the far corner of the net to set off a celebration for the Lady Jays.

"The girls never let down," Trimble said. "They deserve all the credit, they battled and they wanted it."

It is the fourth straight win and seventh in the last eight games for the Lady Jays.

"We're kind of clicking," Trimble said. "Last week, I was talking about if we could ever figure it out, we could go on a run."

Jefferson City figured it out during the weekend, going 3-0 to win their pool at the Kickapoo Tournament in Springfield.

"We have really been rolling in these past four games," Trimble said. "The girls are having fun, they're playing hard and we're getting results."

It starts with the defense for Jefferson City. The Lady Jays have allowed just six goals in their last seven victories.

The backfield of Jamie Rodieck on the left side, Greta Haarmann and Delaney Kaiser in the center, and Grafton Craighead on the right side held Hickman to just one shot on goal in regulation against keeper Megan Duffield.

"They showed up," Trimble said. "They protected the goal and Megan did a great job when the ball did come her way."

Jefferson City finished with 14 total shots in regulation, half of which were on goal.

"Hickman closes down really well," Trimble said.

It was a battle from end to end Tuesday night.

"They know what we like to do, we know what they like to do," Trimble said. "It was our formation against their formation and wherever the ball popped out, whoever ran onto it was going to get chance."

Hickman is now 7-6-1.

Jefferson City (11-5) is back in action today at Quincy, Ill.

In Tuesday's JV game, Jefferson City and Hickman finished scoreless.
