Lady Jays down Father Tolton in soccer

It's a small sample size, just two games.

The Jefferson City Lady Jays gave up an early goal Monday night to the Father Tolton Lady Blazers at the 179 Soccer Park.

"It's our second game here and our second slow start," Jefferson City coach Joren Trimble said. "It just seems we need to get the hang of playing out here.

"We have to come out ready and that's something we have to figure out."

They figured it out the first time, a 2-0 victory against Camdenton. They figured out again against Tolton, scoring three first-half goals on their way to a 3-1 victory.

"Once we got going playing the way we wanted, we looked good," Trimble said.

Father Tolton got on the board a little more than seven minutes into the game on its first shot on goal.

"We got a little disorganized and it wasn't the start we were looking for," Trimble said.

Jefferson City tied it about seven minutes later when Sasha Campbell broke free down the right side and dribbled to the front of the Tolton net before scoring.

"Sasha really trained and studied and did what we asked her to do in the offseason," Trimble said. "It's showing up in her play."

The Lady Jays took the lead for good with a little less than 15 minutes remaining in the half.

After a corner kick, Greta Haarmann found herself with the ball in front of the Tolton net and lined a shot for a score.

"Greta knows when to step up in the big moment and she did there," Trimble said.

Kaitlyn Schwandtner assisted on the score.

The Lady Jays made it 3-1 with just under nine minutes left in the half. The Lady Blazers were whistled for a hand ball in the box and Bailey Dey converted on the ensuing penalty kick.

"She was calm, cool and collected," Trimble said. "That's exactly what you want from somebody in that role. She was confident and buried that shot."

Jefferson City finished with a 21-1 edge in total shots in the first half, including a 12-1 bulge in those on goal. Trimble is looking to turn more of those opportunities into scores.

"We have got to learn to put the easy ones away," Trimble said. "We have to figure out how to tuck it away, but I think that will come."

The Lady Jays had all five of the shots in the second half.

Father Tolton is now 2-4.

Jefferson City (6-4) will play today at Rock Bridge before turning home Thursday to face Battle. Today's JV game will start at 5 p.m., with the varsity contest to follow around 6:45 p.m.

In Monday's JV game, Jefferson City blanked Father Tolton 4-0.
