It turned out to be the fourth shutout of the season for Helias.

But the Kansas City East Bears made the Crusaders work for it.

"They're a quality opponent, we figured they would give us some fits," Helias coach Jay Hebenheimer said after the Crusaders blanked the Bears 2-0 on Monday at the Crusader Athletic Complex.

The Crusaders scored both of their goals in the first four minutes.

Helias got on the board at the 38:26 mark on a goal by Kaleb Wilson. The East keeper punched out a Crusader shot and Wilson got the ball near the top of the box, settled it, then lined a shot into the net.

A little more than two minutes later, Helias doubled its lead. Sam Thompson got the goal, assisted by Carson Mudd.

Mudd drove down the left side before slotting the ball near the Est net.

"Carson really makes a lot of dangerous runs," Hebenheimer said. "He doesn't get rewarded for them very often, but he did a great job there in getting to the goal."

The shot bounced off Thompson's shin guard past the keeper into the net.

"They all count the same," Hebenheimer said. "When we look at this game at the end of the season, it's going to say we won 2-0 and how we got there won't mean a hill of beans."

Helias had just one other shot on goal among its 10 total attempts in the first half.

"I think we relaxed a little bit, especially in the last 10 minutes of the first half," Hebenheimer said. "When you let a team like East play with you, they're going to believe they can do it and that's what happened."

East had eight shots in the first half, four on goal.

Helias keeper Ben Rehagen had to work to keep the zero on the East side of the scoreboard in the second half.

"Ben has great work ethic and heart," Hebenheimer said. "He worked so hard in the off-season so he could earn the starting position and it paid off."

Rehagen made a pair of sprawling saves in the win, finishing with nine saves. Ryan Hake of the Crusaders cleared a shot off the line near the post midway through the second half to preserve the shutout.

East is now 9-8-1.

The Crusaders (15-5) will play today at St. Francis Borgia and Wednesday at Hickman. Helias will wrap up the regular season next Tuesday at home against Vianney. It will be Senior Night for Helias, with action scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
