Three Jays win individual titles at Hickman Tournament

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Jefferson City Jays finished with three individual champions and placed fourth at the Hickman Tournament that concluded Saturday.

"The kids all wrestled very well," Jays coach Phil Cagle said.

Will Kuster at 138 pounds, Peter Kuster at 145 and Nate McKaye at 285 all won their weight divisions.

Will Kuster finished 6-0 with three wins by fall and another by technical fall. Peter Kuster, who won his 150th career match during the tournament, was 5-0 with three wins by fall.

McKaye was 6-0 with two falls. He won his semifinal and championship matches with one-point decisions.

"Nate wrestled a great tournament," Cagle said.

Ian Cote of the Jays was second at 195. He won his first four matches by fall before losing the title match by injury default.

"I believe if Ian hadn't gotten hurt, he'd have won the title," Cagle said.

Garrett Butel at 106 and Gabe Zimmerman at 160 were both fifth for Jefferson City. Jeremiah Wallace at 113 and Corey Denny at 170 were both seventh, while Elijah Jackson was 11th at 182.

The Jays finished with 399 team points. Edwardsville, Ill., took the title with 641.5 points.

Jefferson City will be back at Fleming Fieldhouse on Tuesday when it hosts Hickman.
