Plunkett, Rundle score team points at Southern Junior Cup

CAMDENTON - Team Missouri moved up one spot from its 2017 finish, taking third place Thursday in the Southern Junior Cup at Old Kinderhook.

Missouri finished the two-day event with 9 points. Alabama won its second straight team title with 19 points, finishing two ahead of runner-up Arkansas. Mississippi took fourth place with 2 points.

The second day of competition consisted of match play for all 48 golfers.

A pair of Jefferson City golfers scored points for Team Missouri on Thursday.

Lane Plunkett, who will be a senior this fall at Helias High School, defeated his opponent, Connor McKelroy of Mississippi, to pick up a full point for Missouri.

Jack Rundle, a 2018 Helias graduate, halved his 18 holes with William Werthington of Alabama, adding half a point to Missouri's team total.

Final scores for each of the 24 matchups Thursday were not available.

Tanner Collins and Jett Simmons also won their match-play contests, giving Missouri 3 points in boys singles play.

Taryn Overstreet and Allison Bray each won in girls singles play, giving Missouri two more points to its team total.

Alabama picked up 10 out of a possible 12 points Thursday, winning nine matches and halving two others. Alabama suffered just one loss in 12 matches, overcoming a one-point deficit to Arkansas after the first day of competition.
