Fatima wins seventh straight district volleyball crown

WESTPHALIA, Mo. - The Fatima Lady Comets won their seventh straight district championship Tuesday, beating the Eugene Lady Eagles in straight sets in the Class 2 District 8 Tournament.

Fatima won the match 25-10, 25-19 to advance to the Class 2 state tournament.

Ellie Crede had a team-high eight kills for Fatima, while Courtney Wolfe finished with 15 assists and two aces. Cierra Flores added 12 digs and Avery Orscheln had one block.

The Lady Comets won their semifinal match against Linn 25-15, 25-15 earlier Tuesday. Crede led the way with 15 kills and two aces and Wolfe finished with 26 assists. Flores had 11 digs and Orscheln added two blocks.

Fatima (16-13-3) will host the Class 3 sectional and quarterfinal round of its quadrant in the Class 2 state tournament Saturday. The Lady Comets face District 6 champion Whitfield (10-16-1) at either 1 or 3 p.m. Saturday. The winner of that match will face Hermann (27-6-1) or the District 5 champion in the quarterfinals.

In Tuesday's other semifinal matchup in the District 8 tournament, second-seeded Eugene defeated Steelville in three sets 17-25, 25-19, 26-24.

Eugene opened the district tournament Monday with a 25-8, 25-12 first-round win against Dixon.

Kaitlyn Blain led the Lady Eagles with six kills and nine aces, while Mckensie Peneston had five kills. Gracie Backes chipped in 15 assists and Taylour Ousley and Skylar Walk each had five digs.

Eugene finished the season with a 15-9-2 record.
