Jays baseball falls in tourney opener

UNION CITY, Tenn. - The Jefferson City Jays weren't able to overcome an early deficit Wednesday in a 5-2 loss to Southside (Fort Smith, Ark.) in the L.H. Ladd Memorial Tournament.

The Mavericks scored a run in the first, and two each in the second and third innings.

The Jays got on the board in the third when Hayden Hirschvogel scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. But two strikeouts and a groundout stranded runners at second and third.

Payton Bodenstab grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to drive in Jefferson City's second run. A flyout ended the game with runners at second and third.

Mason Hansen and Tyler Bise each went 2-for-3 for the Jays.

Joseph Travis of Jefferson City pitched 31/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out four. Blake Terry struck out two and got another batter to ground out in the seventh.

Brandon Williams took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 22/3 innings.

Jefferson City (2-1) continues pool play in the tournament at 7 p.m. today against McCracken County (Paducah, Ky.).
