Girls Basketball: Lady Crusaders upset Southern Boone at the buzzer

ASHLAND - The Helias Lady Crusaders nearly went the final 3:47 of Monday's game against the state-ranked Southern Boone Lady Eagles without a point.

Instead, they waited until the final second.

Helias stole the ball with four seconds to play and Morgan Wieberg made a shot at the buzzer to give the Lady Crusaders a 40-38 win against the second-ranked team in Class 3.

Helias led at the end of every quarter, taking a 17-11 lead after the first eight minutes. Southern Boone would cut the lead to 24-22 at halftime and the Lady Crusaders made a late 3-pointer in the third quarter to hold a 33-32 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

The Lady Crusaders held a 38-36 lead for a three-minute stretch in the final quarter until the Lady Eagles made a basket in the final minute to tie the game at 38.

Ashley Rehagen led Helias with 11 points and Lauren Alexander also scored in double figures with 10 points.

Southern Boone won the JV game 31-25.

Helias (6-8), which has won five of its last seven games, will host the Jefferson City Lady Jays next Monday at Rackers Fieldhouse.
