Jays, Lady Crusaders win team titles at Jim Marshall Invite

Four area cross country teams opened their seasons Saturday with first-place finishes at the Jim Marshall Invitational at Cole County Park.

The Jefferson City Jays won the boys big school division title, while the Helias Lady Crusaders had five top-10 finishers to claim the girls big school championship.

Fatima swept both the boys and girls titles in the small school division.

Jays senior Cole Biesemeyer won the boys big school race with a time of 16:52.18. Helias sophomore Jack Crull finished nine seconds back to claim second place and Jefferson City junior Thomas Nield took third.

Jefferson City had all seven runners place in the top 15, tallying 24 team points. Landon Dunlap took fifth, followed by Dawson Schulte (seventh), Ben Krause (eighth) and Izaak Sochinski (11th). Blake Conrad finished 14th.

Jenson Starr placed sixth for Helias.

Blair Oaks had three runners competing in the varsity race. Cole Brenneke led the Falcons with a 17th-place finish.

School of the Osage took ninth place in the team standings, led by Derrick Puckett, who placed 25th overall out of 68 runners.

For the Lady Crusaders, who finished with 31 points in the team standings, senior Abby Hake had a second-place finish in a time of 20:35.18. Holt's Emily Greisenauer won the big school girls race in 19:24.33.

Morgan Yanskey took fifth for Helias, followed by Emma Veltrop (seventh), Alicia Engelbrecht (eighth) and Ashley Eskens (10th). Claire McDonald finished 18th and Elly Bowles took 27th.

The Lady Jays took fourth place in the team standings. Kayelee Payton took third place in 20:46.51 to lead Jefferson City. Jacqueline Hensley (22nd) and Syleste Martinez (23rd) also finished in the top 25.

Grace Scott was one of two Blair Oaks runners in the varsity race, leading the Lady Falcons with a 13th-place finish.

School of the Osage took sixth in the girls team standings. Micah Hill paced the Lady Indians with an 11th-place finish out of 60 runners.

In the boys small school race, Tipton's Isaac Ashton won in a time of 17:04.84. The Cardinals finished seventh in the team standings.

Fatima finished with 57 points in the team standings, led by Dalton Luebbert's seventh-place finish. Logan Borland (ninth), Lucas Laux (12th), Caleb Laughlin (14th) and Dawson Woehr (15th) rounded out the Comets' team score.

Linn's Cole Stephens took third place, helping the Wildcats to a fifth-place performance in the team standings.

Trevor Porter and Jason Crow finished fifth and sixth, respectively, helping the Pintos to third place as a team.

Kendall Reger took eighth place to lead the Versailles Tigers to sixth place overall. Daniel McDonald of South Callaway finished 21st out of 60 runners.

Fatima had a 1-2 finish in the girls race. Senior Brianna Haller won in a time of 20:19.29, followed by Kendall Haller in second in 20:30.09.

Alyssa Struemph took third for the Lady Comets. Katelyn Vanderfeltz and Alexis Fischer placed fourth and sixth, respectively, to give Fatima a team score of 16 points. Erica Reinkemeyer also finished 11th for the Lady Comets.

Lindsey Lebel of Linn placed eighth, while the Lady Wildcats took fifth place in the team standings. New Haven was second, followed by Hallsville and Tipton.

Chamois' Katie Keilholz and Keely Gustafson rounded out the top 10 with ninth- and 10th-place finishes, respectively. South Callaway's Elizabeth Luebbert came in 13th place out of 35 runners.
