Kenzie Gourley lowered the boom on the Hickman Kewpies.

Gourley hammered home a pair of goals from long distance Wednesday night to lead the Jefferson City Lady Jays to a 2-0 victory against Hickman at the 179 Soccer Park.

"They were both elite goals," Jefferson City coach Tom Guinn said. "They were phenomenal finishes. You don't see goals like that very often in high school soccer."

Gourley got the Lady Jays on the board about 10 minutes into the game, setting the ball before blasting a shot past the Kewpie keeper.

"She had a one-touch, then hit it into the upper part of the net," Guinn said. "She couldn't have hit it any better."

The score set off a celebration on the field and on the Jefferson City bench.

"We were so excited to get up on a very good team," Guinn said.

The second came with a little less than eight minutes remaining when Gourley used her left foot to smash the ball into the net from distance.

"The ball comes across her body, she uses her off foot and knocks it into the side netting," Guinn said. "It was a great individual play."

Both of the scores were set up by strong play by Gourley's teammates.

"There was some great buildup to both of those scores," Guinn said. "We had the ball in the back, we worked it up the field and then Kenzie did a great job of burying them.

"When you can score goals as a team, that makes you especially dangerous."

The win came in what was Jefferson City's best overall effort this season.

"This was a side of us that we haven't seen before," Guinn said. "It is so exciting for us to see because tonight, we played at a different level than we have all season."

Was it playing rival Hickman? Was it being back at home?

"I don't know what it was, I'm kind of puzzled," Guinn said. "But this could be a sign of what's to come. This is what we needed at the right time of the season."

Guinn said the team talked after practice earlier this week about what to expect the rest of the way.

"We were midway through the season, our record said we were .500, but we aren't a .500 team," he said. "We talked about how we still had time to show we're better than that.

"This game should really give us some confidence going forward."

Jefferson City then went out and topped Springfield Central 8-1 on the road Tuesday before coming home to get Wednesday's big victory.

"It looks like we're finding the back of the net a little bit more," Guinn said.

On the other end, Hickman (8-5) had a handful of shots, but just one that was dangerous that rattled off the crossbar as Megan Duffield picked up Jefferson City's fifth shutout of the season.

Jefferson City (7-5-2) is off until next Tuesday when it plays at Sedalia Smith-Cotton.

In Wednesday's JV game, Hickman topped Jefferson City 3-2. Kaitlyn Schwandtner and Trinity Pendleton scored for the Lady Jays.
