Jays soccer to host ceremony honoring Horn tonight

A familiar face will be returning to the 179 Soccer Park tonight.

The Jefferson City Jays will host seven other teams in the annual Art Firley Shootout today and Saturday.

In addition, there will be a ceremony to change the name of of Jefferson City's home field to Eddie Horn Field to honor the former longtime head coach of the Jays and Lady Jays.

The ceremony will take place after the third of four games scheduled for today.

Jefferson City will open the event at 1:30 p.m., taking on Marquette. C.B.C. and Kickapoo will square off at 3:30 p.m., followed by Rockhurst taking on Chaminade at 5:30 p.m.

The ceremony should begin around 7:15 p.m. and last for about 30 minutes.

Planned speakers include current Jays head coach Scott Blake, C.B.C. head coach Terry Michler, Rockhurst head coach Chris Lawson, Jefferson City activities director Mark Caballero and assistant activities director Lou Mazzocco.

"And we hope we can get coach Horn to come out and say a few words," Blake said. "We would like to see as many friends and alumni out here as possible."

The final game of the night will pit Nixa against Blue Valley (Kan.) Northwest at 8 p.m.

Saturday's schedule includes Jefferson City vs. Chaminade at 9 a.m., Blue Valley Northwest vs. C.B.C. at 10:30 a.m., Kickapoo vs. Rockhurst at 12:30 p.m., and Marquette vs. Nixa at 2 p.m.

Chaminade is No. 1 in Class 4 in the Missouri High School Soccer Coaches Association's state poll released Thursday. Rockhurst is No. 2, while Marquette is No. 3. Kickapoo is receiving votes in the poll.

Chaminade is No. 17 in the latest Top Drawer Soccer national rankings, one spot ahead of Rockhurst. Marquette is No. 38.

"There are going to be a lot of high-level games," Blake said

Horn stepped down at Jefferson City earlier this year to accept the head coaching positions for the men's and women's programs at State Fair Community College in Sedalia. He was inducted into the Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame in January.
