The outcome was never in doubt Monday night.

But that doesn't mean the Jefferson City Lady Jays didn't have things to play for.

Jefferson City established its defensive dominance with 14 first-quarter turnovers by Rolla on its way to a 45-21 victory against the Lady Bulldogs at Fleming Fieldhouse.

"Our emphasis this year is to be as good defensively as we can be," Lady Jays coach Brad Conway said. "Defense is heart and effort. I really liked our intensity and our energy and for the first 10-12 minutes, it was really good."

The Lady Bulldogs turned the ball over on their first three possessions and called a timeout less than a minute into the contest. Two more turnovers on their next two possessions brought another timeout with 6:11 left in the first quarter with Jefferson City holding a 5-0 lead.

"I loved what we were doing, our intensity," Conway said. "We were getting deflections, we were getting steals."

Jefferson City held a 10-3 lead after the first quarter and led by as many as 15 points in the second quarter on its way to a 26-12 halftime advantage.

The lead would have been larger except the Lady Jays struggled from the field, finishing 10-of-25 in the first two quarters.

"We just had a problem putting the ball in the basket," Conway said. "We're going to get more shots in practice and eventually, they're going to fall. We had some good looks."

The Lady Jays were just 3-of-13 from the field in the third quarter, but were able to stretch their lead to 32-15 heading into the final period.

"There are going to be nights where we struggle offensively, but we can't afford to have defensive letdowns and we were really, really solid," Conway said.

Jefferson City led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter.

Caitlin Anderson paced Jefferson City with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Ellie Rodgers had nine points for Rolla (0-3), which finished with 40 turnovers in the contest.

Jefferson City (2-0) is back in action Wednesday at Kickapoo.

In Monday's JV game, Rolla edged Jefferson City 34-31. Nina Matfield of Jefferson City tied the game at 31 with a 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds remaining before Rolla answered with a 3 at the buzzer for the victory. Morgan Jordan had 10 points for the Lady Jays.
