While the rain made for a long day of continuous activity at Saturday's Class 3 track and field championships at Adkins Stadium, it didn't put a damper on the Blair Oaks Falcons. If anything, it helped.

Distance runner Jason Otto, who finished third in the 3,200-meter run at last week's sectional meet in 10:21.55, took advantage of the extra day of preparation.

"I knew with our rainout yesterday it would be a good advantage because I get a whole new start and I'd be fresh and everything," Otto said. "I just drank a bunch of water and just felt like something crazy would happen today."

That "something crazy" would be Otto improving his time by about seven seconds from last week and taking fourth in 10:14.33, about a second off his personal record.

"With this weather I thought it was going to be 10:30 at least," Otto said.

A 10:30 would have missed the medal stand by five seconds.

"At first (the rainout) hurt me a little mentally, but then I just thought about it as an advantage since I'd get to have a fresh start," Otto said.

The senior was around positions 10-15 for the first five times around, but shot up to ninth, then sixth and eventually to fourth, finishing ahead of fifth place by less than a second.

"I told coach I was just going to wait, run my race, be comfortable and then with four laps to go I just kick it and see what I had," Otto said.

He had enough to earn his first individual state medal.

Blair Oaks junior Cassie Twehus was chasing after her first state medal, missing the medal stand in the shot put last year with a 12th-place finish.

On Friday, she put herself in position to earn a medal by advancing to the finals, which were postponed to Saturday because of weather.

Twehus wasn't able to surpass her prelims throw of 36-7 during Saturday's finals, but it was good enough for sixth place.

"That was more than I was expecting," Twehus said. "I was shooting for eighth so I'm more than happy with sixth."

Twehus will have another opportunity to return to the medal stand next year as a senior.

"I got a PR at state so you can't really ask for more than that," Twehus said.

Twehus' teammates Rachel Isenberg, Kayla Jones, Emily Yeager and Taylor Scott took eighth in the 4x800-meter relay (10:12.24).

The Lady Falcons were second in the final turn, but fell to fifth on the straightaway and ended up eighth because of a fall just before the finish line.

Freshman Annette Peterson just missed earning all-state in the discus, finishing ninth with a toss of 107-7, which is three feet, six inches further than her sectional throw.
