Hornets throttle Versailles for first win of season

FULTON - After seeing film from the previous week in a close-call loss to then state-ranked foe School of the Osage, Versailles Tigers coach Broc Silvers had some questions on just how his team would slow down the Fulton Hornets.

And after Friday night's game, those questions still remain.

Fulton, which had a chance to tie or win against Osage dashed by an interception at the goal line in the final seconds in Week 1, took out its frustration against Versailles on Friday, blowing out to a 56-12 non-conference victory.

The Hornets took out the suspense early on, producing three unanswered touchdowns in the first quarter and four more in the second to head into halftime up 49-0.

The score was 56-0 entering the fourth quarter.

Three of Fulton's first-half scores were set up by Tiger turnovers.

"They played Osage and now it looks like they were as good as their (then-No. 9) ranking suggests," Silvers said. "Fulton playing them to a seven-point game says a lot about now.

"We didn't have a lot of success, period."

Fulton junior running back Ammod Davis burned the Tigers for 155 yards on nine rushing attempts and three touchdowns from 77, 13 and five yards out.

Also for the Hornets, senior quarterback Devin Masek hit on 8-of-11 passes for 147 yards and two TDs and rushed 35 yards for another score. His touchdown tosses were to senior Alec Fleetwood and junior Tre Vaughn.

Seniors Brandon Dews and Lucas Gray also had rushing touchdowns for Fulton.

"We were able to run the ball, which is something we weren't able to do in Week 1," Fulton coach Pat Kelley said. "Our defense was kind of in control. We got three turnovers in the first half and scored on all of them. Our kids came out with a sense of urgency and played hard."

Versailles scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth period on a QB keeper by senior David Connor and when defensive lineman Jonathan Geier returned a fumble 35 yards.

The Hornet defense limited Versailles to just 64 yards of total offense.

Connor connected on 6-of-16 passes for 16 yards. Junior Taylor Dobbins paced the Tiger rushing attack with 27 yards on five carries.

"We had a great opening kickoff to the game and then our first several plays were a success," Silvers said. "Then they started bringing a lot more pressure and we didn't respond well to it. Our receivers and quarterback were not able to beat them in one-on-one matchups.

"And we could have had more success if we didn't turn it over three times."

Now all Versailles (1-1) has to do is open its Tri-County Conference schedule on the road against defending league champion Blair Oaks, a 13-game winner and state semifinalist a year ago. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday in Wardsville.

"Blair Oaks never seems to be rebuilding; it's just reloading," Silvers said. "They are where we want to be some day. We just need to worry about how we play. Going into this game, it's really about us."
