A mere 51 years ago, the Jefferson City Jays defeated Springfield Central 41-0. On Friday night, the Jays beat the Bulldogs again, this time 83-6 at Adkins Stadium.

A year following their first winning regular season since 2002, the Bulldogs wanted to challenge themselves by playing Class 6 Jefferson City - the challenge was one sided.

The Jays scored the second most points in their history and forced seven turnovers to bring their season total to 12 only two weeks into the season.

The defensive starters for Jefferson City hasn't allowed a point yet.

"I don't know if they had a positive yard against our ones," Jays coach Ted LePage said. "Our No. 1 defense is playing extremely well. We still have some deficiencies that we need to work on."

LePage was right. The Bulldogs totaled zero yards against the starting defense and only 71 versus the bench.

As a result of the large margin on the scoreboard, the Jays were run-heavy - gaining 292 yard on 26 attempts. The Jays only completed four passes Friday night, two for touchdowns.

Five running backs, two quarterback and a receiver carried the ball for Jefferson City against the Bulldogs. The Jays wanted to work on their rushing attack since three of the starting offensive linemen are new to that role.

Jefferson City could only gain 68 yards on the ground in last week's 38-0 win against McCluer North.

"We felt like out offensive line was doing a lot better job this week as well," LePage said. "I think the point of attack, pushing and turning the corner for our backs."

The game began with quarterback Gunnar See running to the outside for 29 yards.

On the next offensive series for the Jays, See faked a handoff to receiver Adam Huff and and ran up the middle for a 14-yard score to extend the lead to 27-0 with 6:19 left in the opening quarter.

To close out the first-quarter scoring, Huff took the handoff from See on the first play of the drive and ran it for a 57-yard touchdown.

On the first drive of the second quarter, Carson Ridgeway had runs on four and five yards before See scrambled to his right for three yards for a first down.

See then found an open Allan Roettgen for a 24-yard touchdown, making it 48-0 after the PAT.

Damarion Nelson-Winston went untouched from 21 yards out on the next drive.

"Damarion did a really good job running the ball," LePage said. "We really wanted Carson to run the ball a bunch (Friday night) being Senior Night, I thought he did a good job. We put Mitchell Huston in there, terrific job. Then we went to (Noah) Jahr, he did a really good job. We ran the ball tough. We put in some run plays to try to address some of the things we thought we could get on the outside."

The No. 1 offense went to the bench in the middle of the second quarter and had one more drive to start the second half. Ridgeway made it a one-play drive, running up the middle for a 41-yard touchdown.

"At the same standpoint, we've got to go back and look at the film because I think we're still a little high at that pad level and things that we can clean up," LePage said.

Work on the offensive line and running game, check. Continue defensive dominance, check. However, the Jays weren't able to get too deep into their gameplan with the game being decided early.

"There was a plan going into this game, it worked out extremely well to start the game, but then we got to where we couldn't do some things that we wanted to do," LePage said. "We had some things in our gameplan we wanted to try against the 4-2-5 defense that they were playing, but the score didn't allow us to do that."

This week, the Jays host Hickman (0-2), the third straight game they'll play a winless team.

The Kewpies, who is on a 14-game losing streak dating back to 2014, lost their first two games this season by a combined score of 82-13. Jefferson City won 56-26 at Hickman last season.

The game is at 7 p.m. Friday at Adkins Stadium.
