College Track and Field: Scrivner wins weight throw

ELSAH, Ill. - William Woods senior Madelyn Scrivner took first place in the women's weight throw Friday at the American Midwest Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Principia College.

Scrivner (Eldon High School) won the event with a throw of 53 feet, 9 inches, a distance that automatically qualifies her for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships. She also took third in the shot put with a throw of 39-6.5.

William Woods junior Cassidy Roling (Helias High School) finished fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 42-9.

Freshmen Shaley Eichholz (Eugene High School) and Harley Nale (Linn High School) also won a conference title. The duo ran on the Owls' distance medley relay, which posted a first-place time of 13:59.74.

Nale and another William Woods freshman, Naomi Kerkula (Jefferson City High School), were on the Owls' winning 4x400-meter relay, which clocked a time of 4:05.94.

Nale and junior Justice Miller (Russellville High School) finished fourth on the Owls' 4x800-meter relay, which posted a time of 10:55.53.

In individual competition, Kerkula came in third in the 60-meter dash final, posting a time of 8.23 seconds. She also took fifth in the 400-meter dash (1:03.21) and 10th in the 200-meter dash (28.32 seconds). Miller finished 11th in the 200 with a time of 28.39 seconds.

Nale placed 10th in the 600-meter run (1:54.16). Eichholz finished 12th in the 1,000-meter run (3:50.27) and 13th in the 3,000-meter run (13:17.96).

William Woods finished second in the final team standings with 121 points. Columbia College won the women's championship with 176 points.

Senior Grace Young (Russellville High School) won two individual titles for the Cougars. Young won the 1,000 (3:16.83) and the 3,000 (10:45.19). She also took runner-up in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:27.83.

In the men's events, William Woods freshman Hunter Carpenter (California High School) had a pair of top-5 finishes in relay competition.

Carpenter helped the Owls' distance medley relay to a third-place finish in 11:05.97. He also ran on the 4x800 with sophomore Matt Fringer (Russellville High School), helping William Woods take fifth in 9:03.98.

In the 5,000, sophomore Charlie Schattgen (New Bloomfield High School) finished 12th in 17:23.64 for the Owls, followed by junior Jamie Porter (Russellville High School) in 13th place with a time of 17:31.20.

The William Woods men also finished second at the conference championships with 96 points. Columbia College claimed the men's title with 198 points.

Williams Baptist freshman Jacob Whittle (Eldon High School) posted three top-10 finishes. Whittle's best performance came in the men's distance medley relay, helping the Eagles to a fourth-place finish in 11:09.36.

Whittle also ran on the 4x400 relay, which placed sixth in 3:42.22. His best individual performance was the 400, finishing ninth in 54.52 seconds.
