Renegades rally to win series opener against Mustangs

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Jefferson City Renegades staged a late rally Thursday night to defeat the St. Joseph Mustangs 8-4 in MINK League action.

Trailing 4-1, the Renegades tied the game with three runs in the seventh inning before scoring four in the eighth to defeat the Mustangs, who have the best record in the league this season.

In the seventh, Cole Evans singled to score Hunter Swift and Jady Reese. Mike Million followed with a single to plate Avery Jennings and knot the game at 4. It was Million's 25th RBI this season.

In the eighth, Hunter Southerland singled home Ty Roseberry and Anthony Green to make it 6-3. Evans then doubled to plate Jennings and Southerland.

The Renegades scored their other run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Evans that scored Southerland. Evans is hitting .361 this season with 28 RBI.

Evans and Southerland had two hits each in an eight-hit Renegade attack. The Renegades were aided by receiving seven walks as the Mustangs used four pitchers in the contest.

Peyton Pocock was the winning pitcher in relief. He pitched four scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out three. Kylan Easley worked the first five innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits and a walk. He struck out three.

The Mustangs scored a run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth.

The Renegades (16-20 overall, 13-19 MINK) and Mustangs (27-11, 21-10) will continue their three-game series with a 7 p.m. contest today.
