Your Opinion: Gratitude for Hensley, Ward

Dear Editor:

In his letter to the editor (June 5), 5th Ward City Councilman Jon Hensley praised the many people who have been helping our neighbors who saw their homes damaged or destroyed by the recent tornado. All those who have helped clear downed trees; picked up debris from the storm; provided water, food or shelter; or helped people move to new residences certainly deserve our gratitude.

However, I want to single out Councilman Hensley and 2nd Ward Councilwoman Laura Ward for the outstanding work they have been doing since the storm. They have not only been helping to organize work crews and get volunteers to the right places at the right time, they have been cleaning up debris, moving furniture for those fortunate enough to have furniture left and a place to which to move. No matter how dirty, how hot and humid the work has been, they have set an example for how we should all treat each other. When I made a joking comment to Councilwoman Ward that she probably didn't know carrying furniture in the heat was part of her job description, she said maybe not, but it's what neighbors do for each other.

These two City Council members have not only proven themselves to be excellent public servants; more importantly, they are good neighbors.

Thank you, Jon and Laura.
