Your Opinion: Balancing the federal budget

Dear Editor:

Having read many letters pro and con on how our government is/should work it is my opinion that most seem to miss the real issue for our country.

I particularly support the letter from Charles Schroeder published on Jan. 31. Not only would I set concrete deadlines as he suggests to produce one-, five- and 10-year budgets that balance the budget and eliminate the deficit, I would also borrow a page from the Catholic book on electing a pope. I would lock every representative and senator in a room 24/7 until they can come to an agreement producing the budgets laid out in Charles’ letter. They would not have outside access to staff, cell phones, etc. until the job is done. In this way I am confident they would not waste any time to do their job.

Failing that I would suggest “put me in charge.” As a retired CPA I would produce a series of balanced budgets that make changes to current domestic and international government policies and operations that no Republican or Democratic politician would like.
