Your Opinion: Term limits needed for Congress

Dear Editor:

You can believe it: The Democrats in Washington, D.C., say that President Trump is divisive, a liar, a racist. Well there is no one more divisive, bigger liars or more racist than some of the senators and representatives in D.C.

You can believe it: The Democrats say that President Trump is destroying our democratic government. They fail to mention that we are a democratic republic government, and they want to destroy the republic part of government. No Constitution, no Bill of Rights, no electoral collage. No life, liberty, pursuit of happiness.

Our Founding Fathers were knowledgeable, forward-thinking people. Not like the people we have on Congress today. Stupid is as stupid does. All you have to do is to consider the do-nothing Congress acting concerning the immigration crisis, or the $22 trillion debt.

You can believe it: Congress wants to give themselves a pay raise. Standard salary for a member of Congress is $174,000 a year. They are in session 162 days — $1,074 a day. About 32.4 weeks for $5,370 a week. They only work around 2.6 days a week, according to data — $2,066 a day. If we include salaries, gold-plated benefits and perks, like staff health care, pensions, etc., they receive $200,00 or more per year.

They can earn outside income up to 15 percent of salary, $26,100, a total of $226,100 a year. That places them in the top 3 percent of Americans in terms of income. Our Congress members spend millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money campaigning for re-election. Of course, they call it constituent service.

In the last few elections it cost $5 million, more or less to campaign for a House seat. For a Senate seat, the cost is $20-$40 million. This next election the cost will be more. The corrupt political cartel in Washington, D.C., is destroying our nation.

We need the 28th Amendment to limit terms for Congress. We the people can help drain the swamp.
