Our Opinion: Your opportunity to serve

Want an opportunity to serve your community with hundreds of other volunteers, after being served breakfast by a pair of state elected officials?

There’s no long-term commitment; just three hours of work to benefit various segments of Jefferson City.

Jefferson City’s eighth annual Serve Jeff City spring cleaning event takes place April 27. The event is a partnership involving the United Way of Central Missouri; Jefferson City Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department; Jefferson City YMCA; and other community organizations.

As we recently reported, enough volunteers have already signed up to complete several of the planned projects. However, hundreds more volunteers are needed, particularly for outside projects, to complete all the projects.

Some of the projects already covered will organize supplies for Central Missouri Foster Care & Adoption Association and the Council for Drug Free Youth; clean playgrounds for Little Explorers Discovery Center; build Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri Buddy Packs for distribution; and assist with Binder Lake, Hickory Park, McClung Park and Wears Creek clean-up.

Projects still seeking volunteers are cleaning porches and installing a canopy at Little Explorers Discovery Center; cleaning up after the upcoming Capital City Cook-Off and performing yard work for Special Learning Center; cleaning and organizing at Dreams to Reality; trail cleaning at Knowles YMCA; cleaning the outside of homes for River City Habitat for Humanity; compiling resources at American Red Cross of Central Missouri; and preparing garden beds for spring for the Cole County Extension Center.

Before the projects start, you’ll receive a T-shirt (while supplies last) and an 8 a.m. pancake breakfast served by Lt. Gov. Mike Kehoe and state Sen. Mike Bernskoetter at the McClung Park Pavilion.

To make the commitment, simply sign up at servejeffcity.org. Can’t make it on April 27? One day later, the faith-based community again will follow up with a similar event named Mission JC. To sign up, visit missionjc.org.

Between the two events, organizers are hoping for 500 volunteers looking to better the community in which they live. We hope you’ll consider being one of them.
